Memories of Grandpa

The words that spring to mind when I think of Grandpa are 'what a strong character he was'!

He had such strong ethics and morals, among them equality, for which he worked hard for in his voluntary role as Councillor for Bath County Council. Perhaps inspired by his years living in Malaysia with the Royal Navy. Grandpa unlike many of his generation, didn't view people of other ethnicities as 'different', he didn't agree with prejudice and spoke highly of friends from all different backgrounds. His interest in world travel certainly sparked mine. I remember looking in awe at my grandparents collections of artefacts from across the world, particularly Asia.

He always liked to be fair, supporting each of his grandchildren equally and taking great interest in how they had chosen to spend their investments to enrich their lives. Although Grandpa couldn't always show how much he loved his family with words, he often chose to show his love through financial support to his family and took great pride in each and every achievement. It clearly brought him a lot of pleasure to be able to support his family financially as a result of his own achievements during his career.

He loved to debate and was always interested in current affairs and we shared many lively discussions. His extreme amount of intelligence in mathematical and engineering subjects is also to be noted. He had a very quick mind in that sense and through his career helped to pass his knowledge onto others.

I had the opportunity to meet some of Grandpa's old colleagues from the Malaysian Navy in 2009 and had a really privileged insight into what the young Trevor must have been like in the 1960s! They held an immense amount of respect for him and shared some lovely memories. He loved to party in those days as well as work very hard! I met one of his ex-students, whom Grandpa lectured about Thermodynamics at Manderdon College. He remembered Grandpa fondly as a mentor and great teacher.

In later years after Nanna had passed in 2011, Grandpa gradually began to lose his memories to Alzheimer's, this was hard to see, but he maintained dignity until the end. He was always grateful for visitors, although he couldn't always converse much. He enjoyed someone being with him and from the looks we exchanged, you could feel the love he felt for his family.

We are grateful for his long and full life and grateful he was able to pass onto the next life peacefully and without pain.
